Gay's guide for Rio

Rio De Janeiro is certainly a destination for gay and lesbian travelers. The cosmopolitan Cariocas are gay/lesbian friendly, making you feel welcome almost everywhere. Sui Generes is Rio's gay/lesbian glossy magazine. It's available at most newsstands, and lists local arts, music, and events. O Grito is Rio's gay newspaper, written only in Portuguese.

Do not expect a leather or SM scene - this is Rio! If you are looking for leather bars, fetish bars, bear bars, Levi's bars, or anything that specific, you will be disappointed. The Carioca scene is more about integration than segregation. Gay men are happy to share their space with lesbians, and often straights are also welcome.

Ipanema's hottest gay night-spot is on the beach block of Rua Teixeira de Melo (this street is next to Farme, the local gay beach). A combination of professionals, intellectuals, actors, fashion victims, gym bunnies, artists, models, fag hags, lesbians, and others keep things eclectic and fun. Circulate between Restô, Galeria Cafe and Spin. Dama de Ferro, on Rua Vinicius de Morais (at the corner of Lagoa), they cater to the same clientele. Along Copacabana beach there's Maxim's Cafe (mixed gay/straight), near Copacabana Palace Hotel. This is a traditionally gay-friendly area known as Bolsa, near Lido. Transvestites and hustlers are pretty much part of the scene, and you should exercise some caution. The gay Kiosk Rainbow is right across the street (it can be easily identified by the large rainbow flag). Owners Xanda and Rubirosa are sometimes seen in drag, and there are performances on weekends.

If you are in the area, go for a fresh coconut water or a romantic drink under the stars. La Cueva is still around after 30 years in business. A favorite with the girls is Discotcheka, the lesbian club at Bunker on Sunday nights. This club has 3 dance floors, as well as a number of special parties with international guest DJ's. Wednesdays and Thursdays (mixed gay/straight) are popular with gays and lesbians. La Girl is the only lesbian dance club in town open every night of the week.
